When working with colleagues, having a common goal in mind can help us to get the work done. It allows us to focus and prevent distractions. When we’re working on a project with another colleague, it’s important to develop an agreed-upon objectives list before beginning work. This will allow us to take things one step further and achieve the same goals while not needing all of our energy and time to complete the project as a whole.

This will work out best when the responsibilities of each person in relation to the completion of a specific objective is clearly understood, and goals can then focus on fully admitting their ability in their respective areas and helps locate missing pieces of information or analysis that may have been overlooked and results in a better performance as a collective unit. By using shared goals as a tool to keep up productivity and efficiency, it will optimally increase content creation.

The value in established goals is evident in our ability to effectively direct, plan and organize projects. Strategic thinking and planning are two tools that work best when we understand the overall mission of these plans, and focus predominantly on ourselves in writing it down by setting goals all with minds eye.

Locke and Latham’s Theory of Goal Setting and Task Performance further refined the SMART acronym in 1990 by focusing on the importance of task strategies that accompanied goal setting. So, now we have “SMARTER” goals:

• Specific – What do you want to accomplish?
• Measurable – How will it be assessed?
• Achievable – Is this realistic? Can you achieve it?
• Relevant – Is it relevant to the big picture and/or other work you’re doing? (i.e., as discussed by Locke & Latham, 1990; we want people to focus on goals that align with their overall career aspirations)
• Time-related – When do you plan to complete the goal? Set a timeline!
• Exciting – Will this goal help you learn or gain success in your role and/or organization? (i.e., SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound, Engaging).

Here are some examples of common objectives you could use when working with colleagues:

1. To determine if it’s necessary to focus on collaborative interventions for the client(s) A and/or B at this time – yes/no
2. To set a time frame for getting together to discuss the appropriateness of focusing collaborative interventions for the client(s) A and/or B at this time – X number of weeks from now
3. To determine if it’s necessary to focus on collaborative interventions with family members of client(s) C during individual sessions over the next few months – yes/no
4. To set a time frame for getting together to discuss the appropriateness of focusing collaborative interventions with family members of the client(s) C during individual sessions over the next few months – 2-3 weeks from now etc.

Of course, you could also use these objective examples in conjunction with other intervention methods besides just collaboration, but the idea is to help you think creatively about what your goals are and how you can fulfill them most effectively.
