You’ll be in charge of sharing information with other practitioners about child safeguarding and protection. • Situational indicators can include the sudden inability to meet the children’s financial needs, such as food, clothing, shelter, and medical care; apparent lack of concern by parents about their children’s well-being; poor supervision in dangerous settings (e.g., severe weather conditions, traffic hazards, exposure to drugs, alcohol or weapons); drug addiction; alcohol abuse; mental illness in the parent.

Actions that need to be taken where there are safeguarding concerns:

Care workers should be aware of the signs and symptoms that may indicate abuse. They must question unusual behaviours, such as a child’s understanding or inappropriate language for their age group; if there are suspicions about any situation it is important to report this immediately so proper guidance can be obtained regarding what actions need to take place next.

If you are concerned that a child or young person is being exposed to any form of abuse, it is important to contact appropriate organisations (local authorities will have specific teams for this) immediately.

If you see a child being abused, here are some suggestions on what to do:

• Take action. Don’t stand by and watch it happen – make a phone call if you can or tell another bystander
• If violence is happening, try and intervene safely without putting yourself at risk of being attacked
• If the abuser is an adult, they more than likely have some kind of influence over the child so you may need to get the child away from them to safety
• Be prepared to testify if the case makes it to court. Don’t leave it until it is too late!
