5.3. Explain why continuing professional development is important

In order to be successful, CPD incumbents must maintain the same level of quality and quantity across different positions in order to maintain a consistent stream of new content, ideas, and researchers. The goal is to have people who are good at both managing these changes and still meet the expectations of society’s need for education being able to say today’s students can learn from those who have been there before.

Organizations have to be committed to continuing professional development. CPD managers and evaluators have to be able to measure progress, set goals, and provide feedback. They also need the ability to recognize the efforts of their staff in order for them to continue their work. The result is that both the organization and the individual will benefit from continuing professional development activities.

In order to get the most out of the program, they need to have buy-in from all levels. This can be accomplished by educating those who are involved in the program on what it will accomplish and how it will benefit them, as well as their organization.

Finally, CPD programs need to be reviewed and updated on a regular basis. There needs to be a review of what was accomplished and what was not accomplished. This way there can be an evaluation of whether or not there should be any changes made or if it should continue as is.
