4.6 Reflect on own practice in relation to equality and diversity

Reflection is the process of analyzing your own work in an effort to learn from it and improve on what needs more improvement. Doing so will improve your practice and help you learn from different experiences. Although the process should be ongoing, it is often useful to purposefully reflect on specific topics, such as diversity.

The main reason that reflection is done in this profession is because of its crucial importance. The more we work with others, the better our professional relationships will become. However, what makes a relationship successful? One important aspect of this would be equality between two people or groups of people which includes fairness and impartiality among them. This can be difficult if a person does not understand or take into account another’s perspective, thoughts, feelings, and culture. By reflecting on own practice in relation to equality and diversity issues – how they arose – one can take preventative measures against these issues.

The following are some questions to answer when reflecting on one’s own practice in relation to equality and diversity issues:

• How did the equalities issues you faced arise? In what situations, with whom were they raised?
• Did someone else create a problem within your work or personal life concerning this topic? If so, how could you have prevented it from happening again?
• Were they self-created by you, perhaps due to a lack of understanding or knowledge about the topic area itself? How might this be remedied or avoided in future encounters?
• What kind of practices would help prevent these problems from arising again – either for yourself personally, others with whom you collaborate, or those who use your services?
• How did you respond to the issues that arose in terms of your personal practices? What would you do differently next time?
• What kind of practice are you undertaking now to ensure equality, diversity, and inclusion are not only kept in mind but also carried out within your work or business?
• How can you make sure that everyone subjectively feels supported by your practice regarding this topic area? Are there any people who still feel alienated or unwelcome because of their difference from others in the work environment?
• Do they have access to equal opportunities for advancement, development, etc.?
