Sexual abuse: Unwanted touching; Sexual demands that are not wanted or that make a person uncomfortable; Sleeping difficulties, nightmares, disturbing recollections of the felt experience of being sexually abused; Avoidance of being touched or fondled by a partner.
Emotional/psychological abuse: Unexplained withdrawal from usual activities and friends; Inappropriate anger or fear of certain people or places associated with someone who has caused harm; Feelings of isolation, anxiety, and/or panic attacks; Depression.
Financial/material abuse: Unexplained requests for money or refusal to give money to spouse or partner; Demands that the victim account for all money spent; Withholding financial resources such as keys, checkbook, credit cards; Refusing to contribute financially to the relationship; Forcing the victim to beg for money.
Modern slavery: Note that this list is not all-inclusive, it may be helpful to look at other signs of potential modern slavery. Characteristics of modern slaves include poor physical condition, malnourishment, psychological trauma (present in over 90% cases), fatigue, respiratory problems, untreated medical conditions, scars from branding or burns from hot irons, tattooing of numbers on children.
Discriminatory abuse: Inequality in decision-making power; Inequality in relationship roles as defined by gender, race, age etc.; Prevailing sense that one spouse/partner has more value than the other; One spouse/partner uses sexual favors as a “weapon” to influence decisions; One spouse/partner requires the other to flaunt social norms such as drinking heavily, wearing revealing clothing, or talking about sex. Institutionalized abuse: Subjugation of one person’s will by another; Denial of opportunities for children to interact with peers and adults outside the family; Withholding of food, medical treatment, education.
Self-neglect: Poor personal hygiene; Neglect of self-care such as bathing and grooming; Lacking appropriate clothing for weather conditions; Not prepared for unexpected visitors or contact with others (i.e., not dressed).
Neglect by others: Unattended physical problems, such as infections or chronic physical conditions; Unattended medical needs, such as medications or treatments.
