4.4 Wash hands using the recommended method
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.
When washing hands, lather the soap around all of your hands, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers, and under your nails. Scrub well for at least 20 seconds. Rinse well with clean water. Dry hands completely using a clean towel or air dry them.
If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Rub sanitizer all over your hands, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers, and under your nails. Rub sanitizer for at least 20 seconds. Allow the sanitizer to air dry.
If you’re using a paper towel, open the paper towel and throw it away after you use it to turn off the faucet or open the door.
Do not use hand sanitizers that contain oil or other ingredients. They may increase the risk of skin irritation and infections with certain bacteria, such as those caused by germs spread through contact with contaminated soil (e.g., harmful bacteria such as MRSA and VRE).
Although hand sanitizers provide a great way to kill many types of harmful germs, they will not eliminate all germs, including those that cause colds and some other mild infections.
As an additional option for cleaning hands: wet your hands with clean (preferably warm) water, apply a small amount of plain soap, and rub your hands together to create a lather. Then rinse thoroughly under clean, running water. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
