5.2 Explain the principles for safe moving and handling
When moving or handling a person, always use slow, smooth movements. This will help to avoid injuries to both the person being moved and the person doing the moving.
When moving and handling patients, you want to ensure their safety as well as your own. The following are some general principles to keep in mind:
1. Always assess the situation before beginning to move the patient. Make sure you have enough help, that there is a clear path for transport, and that the patient is stable.
2. Whenever possible, use a mechanical device such as a gurney or lift to move the patient.
3. If you must manually lift the patient, use correct body mechanics: squat down with your legs apart and arms bent, using your leg and arm strength to lift the patient. Do not twist your back.
4. Keep the patient’s head and spine aligned at all times.
5. If you must pull, use your shoulder muscles (not your back) and your hips to move the patient. This protects the spine against injury.
6. Stand close enough to the patient that you can maintain their balance easily at all times during handling or transfer activities without having to hold onto them or touch them with any part of your body.
7. Keep the patient’s arms and legs positioned comfortably at their sides during all movements to prevent causing them harm or injury.
8. Always use a backboard or similar device for transport if you suspect spinal injuries are present.
9. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves, when necessary to protect yourself from exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
10. If you suspect a patient has sustained an injury while transferring or handling, document the situation fully and report it immediately to your supervisor/manager.
