A novel pathogen named Bacterium X was isolated in the UK from a person who arrived via international travel: Life Science Assignment, UO, UK
University | University of Oxford (UO) |
Subject | Life Science |
A novel pathogen named Bacterium X was isolated in the UK from a person who arrived via international travel. Your assignment is to report the likely pathogenesis of ‘Bacterium x’ and explain to a medical microbiology hospital team whether there are risks to patients for transmission. The evolutionary origins of ‘ Bacterium are unclear but genome sequencing reveals a novel bacterial genus that has accumulated a variety of virulence and resistance genes on a plasmid An antibiogram determined that Bacterium x is not susceptible to ampicillin or chloramphenicol.
The pathogen was isolated from a patient who had skin abscesses, blood in their urine, nausea, diarrhea, and intestinal cramps. The patient suspects that they caught the disease from their study of primates as several of these apes studied had obvious skin diseases. Write a report that outlines one infection scenario that would account for the patient’s disease symptoms, if they caught the bacterium x from the apes, and based on the proteins from the plasmid that are listed below.
