Aerofoils are required in a variety of devices, from wings to turbomachinery, from ducts to sails: Computational Fluid Dynamics Course Work, CU, UK

University Cranfield University (CU)
Subject Computational Fluid Dynamics

Introduction

Aerofoils are required in a variety of devices, from wings to turbomachinery, from ducts to sails. Depending on the purpose of the application, different performance metrics can be devised, regardless, these will be a function on how the aerofoil manipulates pressure to extract or impose meaningful work from or on the fluid.

Typical performance limits occur when the aerofoil is no longer able to maintain the attached flow. It is, therefore, of interest to be able to predict pressure and viscous forces acting over aerofoils. The objectives of this laboratory are to compute flows over a given aerofoil at different angles of attack and:

  • extract pressure coefficients;
  • extract skin friction coefficients;
  • extract lift, drag and pitching moment coefficients;
  • locate any separation points.
