Structural Design of a 4m Roof Beam: Load and Stability Analysis, Assessment 2

University University of East London (UOEL)
Subject Structural Engineering

Assessment 2

A warehouse in Rosyth, Fife, Scotland require a new roof to be installed. Roof area is of dimensions 8m by 15m. A series of columns are already existing along the mid-width line of the warehouse (i.e. 4m distance from the outer wall). This means, maximum span of any roof beam between supports is 4m.

Structural Engineering Assessment 2

  • Assume only the following material will be available for you to construct the beams (materials are given per beam of 2m length):
  • SterlingOSB Zero OSB3 FSC 2440 x 600x 9mm- 1 sheet
  • Kiln Dried C16 Regularised Treated Timber 47 x 100mm- 4m in length
  • Kiln Dried Regularised Treated Timber 47 x 50mm- 7.2m in length

Do You Need Assignment of This Question

Part 2: Design assessment Part 2

You are required to design a 4m long beam, considering the material restrictions per 2m length to resist the roof loads. You will submit your design as individual submissions. In your submission, you must:

1. Provide a sketch (or sketches) to explain your beam design

2 .Provide load calculations

3. Show bending moment, axial force, and shear force diagrams

4. Show material property values used in the calculations

5 .Beam section capacity calculations for flexure (all assumptions must be clearly stated)

6. Beam shear capacity calculations (all assumptions must be clearly stated)

7. Stability calculations for potential buckling failure modes

8. Bearing calculations (only for the support locations)

  • You may submit your calculations in typewritten or handwritten form. However, you must ensure the calculations are presented clearly in an easy-to-follow manner.
  • You are free to choose any appropriate calculation method (including those not covered in the lectures).
